What is Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment?
Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment by Align Technology that offers the outcomes of braces but without many of the perceived drawbacks. Using 3D digital scanning technology, a series of custom-made aligners are made that fit over the teeth. The aligners are clear, removable, and gently shift teeth into place, so there are no metal brackets and wires, and no issues with having food stuck in your braces.
The two benefits that most Invisalign® wearers like best are that Invisalign® retainers are practically invisible and that they are removable. So users don’t need to feel self-conscious about wearing braces, and they don’t need to try and eat or floss with them on.
How Does Invisalign Treatment Work?
After an initial visit to capture 3D digital scans of the teeth using the iTero 3D Scanner, a series of clear aligners are made. The Invisalign aligners are engineered from a strong, clear material that allows them to be worn over the teeth and gently move teeth into proper alignment and space.
Users progress through the series of clear aligners, typically moving up to the next set of aligners on a weekly basis, as their teeth are gently shifted into place with very light pressure. Each aligner should be worn at least 20 hours a day for best results, and only removed when eating, brushing, and flossing. With Invisalign treatment, you can enjoy the flexibility of removing the aligners for special occasions or meals.
Wearers typically visit the office every six weeks. This allows your orthodontist to monitor progress. Although it varies on a case-by-case basis, total treatment time typically lasts for 9-15 months and includes 18-30 Invisalign clear aligners.

Benefits of Invisalign Aligners vs. Braces
Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign® offers quite a few benefits, such as:
- Virtually invisible treatment with comparable results
- Fewer office visits
- More predictable treatment timeline
- No pain or injuries from broken components such as wires and brackets
- Removability
If you’re worried about the appearance of traditional braces, more likely than not, Invisalign is an option for you. Invisalign has been proven to work with a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overbites, underbites, gapped teeth, crowded teeth, and even open bites (where the teeth do not close properly). Invisalign aligners are designed to address both simple and more complex treatment needs.
Dentist vs. Orthodontist for Invisalign Treatment
When considering Invisalign, you might wonder whether to choose a dentist or an orthodontist for your treatment. Both dentists and orthodontists are trained to provide Invisalign treatment, but there are important distinctions to consider. Orthodontists are specialists in straightening teeth and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws, having completed additional years of training beyond dental school. This expertise allows them to handle more complex treatment cases effectively.
Dentists, on the other hand, provide a broad range of oral health care services, including Invisalign. For simpler cases of mild misalignment, a dentist can effectively manage Invisalign treatment. However, for more complex cases, an orthodontist’s specialized training can be crucial. Choosing an orthodontist, like Dr. Ferri, ensures you receive expert care tailored to your specific orthodontic needs.

Invisalign FAQ
Am I a candidate for Invisalign clear aligners?
How much does Invisalign treatment cost?
The cost of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case. During your consultation, we will provide you with a detailed estimate. We will explain different payment options that makes Invisalign treatment affordable. Invisalign treatment cost can be managed with our flexible payment plans.
How long will Invisalign treatment last?
Treatment times vary depending on individual cases but typically range from 9 to 15 months. Most patients require 18-30 sets of aligners to achieve their new smile. In some cases, a shorter treatment time can be expected, especially for retreatment or minor adjustments. Retreatment with Invisalign is often quicker and less intensive, allowing you to perfect your smile in just a few months.
Can I get Invisalign for my child?
Yes! Parents considering Invisalign for their teen or child, clear aligners can be made with blue indicator dots that allow parents to monitor actual retainer usage. As the retainers are worn, the blue indicator dots fade. If the blue dots aren’t fading, parents know that their child isn’t wearing the Invisalign aligners as often as they should be. Invisalign works well for teens, ensuring they get a new smile without the hassle of traditional braces.
